Tobin Road Race

We had a magnificent day and a big turnout for this third annual event.
You see here the first part of the adult crowd at the start ; there were too many to get in one photo!

There was a good turn out for the children's races, too; and there was much fun to be had with a balloon man, crafts, and food.

Again we thank the Tobin Family for all the hard work they put in to making this a memorable and successful occasion, and for the resulting enhancement of the Children's collection at the library.

This Early Literacy Station is now available to our youngest patrons thanks to the Tobins' efforts

Saturday November 19th, the Hanson Public Library Foundation welcomes all to come to the Open House at the Library. The time is 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Clifford the Big Red Dog will be here this year [he takes a break at noon, but is available for photos other than that.]

We're having a Magic Show again this year, featuring Matt Roberts. You need to register for that, which is from 12 - 12:45.

Tom Boyer will lend a pleasing air to the day with his piano music ; and light refreshments will be available throughout the day.

We hope you can drop in ! We'll be happy to show you what's new.

3rd Annual John P. Tobin Road Race

November 6th, 2011 is the date for this year's event. And it is an event ! There are running races for adults and kids, and also a race for walkers. There are activities for the kids and plenty of wonderful raffles to try your luck.

This is an annual fundraiser in memory of John P. Tobin who was a frequent patron of the Hanson Library. To date, proceeds raised from donations and the races have been used to purchase 420 children's books as well as an Early Literacy Station, which is a computer dedicated to inspiring every child to become a lifelong learner. Included in this computer are interactive educational games and live ebooks. The present value of the John P. Tobin Collection is $9,700.

Runners can pre-register online at www.johnptobinroadrace.com.
Adult entry fee is $20. Kids entry fee is $10.00. Pre-register BEFORE 10/22/2011, and you'll get a t-shirt.
Walkers...your fees are the same, but you must register at the Hanson Library.A t-shirt will also be yours if you pre-register before 10/22/2011.

The hard work of the Tobin Family has been of great benefit to our younger patrons. The event is a fun filled day. If you are a runner or a walker, consider registering for the race and enjoying the day with us.

Bruins mascot to visit

Blades, the official Boston Bruins mascot, is coming to the Hanson Library on Tuesday, August 23 from 1:00-2:00 pm. The Hanson Library won a summer reading visit from Blades and his friends from the Bruins community relations department.

Join in the fun filled afternoon with a brief historical reenactment from the Freedom Trail Foundation followed by Bruins trivia questions with prizes, pictures with Blades, and some Bruins refreshments. Bob Halloran visits the library

This Thursday, August 11, at 6:30, Bob Halloran will be here to talk about his book "Irish Thunder, the Hard Life and Times of Mickey Ward". We're looking forward to hearing about the history and writing of this book, which inspired the recent film hit "The Fighter".

It's one of the books we're reading in the Novel Destinations Summer Reading group; it'll be interesting to get Mr. Halloran's viewpoint on the making of the movie as well.

Lobster Bake

August is here again and we have the HPL Foundation Lobster Bake to look forward to on Wednesday the 17th, at 6:30. As it did last year, the Lobster Dinner includes clam chowder, lobster, steamers,keilbasa,potato salad,corn, and coleslaw for $40.
The Chicken Dinner includes 1/2 barbq chicken, potato salad, corn and coleslaw, for $25.
All meals include rolls/butter, watermelon, and a soft drink. Cash Bar available.
Camp Kiwanee Lodge is a wonderful venue and makes the food taste even better !
You can buy your tickets only through Aug 12th, at either the library or the Olde Hitching Post. Known for its delicious food, the Hitching Post is catering again this year.

Summer Reading Registration for the youngsters

One World Many Stories is this year's theme, and Friday the 24th is our opening day and registration.

Families are welcome to come and see Creature Teachers, with an "animals around the world" show at 10:30 a.m., and then sign up for the various activities that will be going on over the summer weeks for the kids. A complete rundown was included in our recently mailed newsletter. We also have listings on our online calendar.
Activities are planned for ages 0 - 18; from storytimes for toddlers to summer reading for teens.

Thursday the 23rd we start our new Adult summer reading program, Novel Destinations. Over the next few weeks we'll be reading "The King's Speech", "Never Let Me Go", and "Irish Thunder", seeing the movies that those books generated, and discussing each title and format. Bob Halloran, author of "Irish Thunder",[movie: The Fighter} will be visiting the library in August. It's a varied lineup of genres, all good titles; program sign-up is 7-7:30 p.m.

Come at 6 p.m. and enjoy listening to a Local Authors' Table.

New Passes-USS Constitution Museum

The USS Constitution Museum

The Hanson Public Library now offers 2 passes to the USS Constitution Museum in Boston. Admission is FREE for up to 9 people. This is a great place to take the kids, especially with the 4th of July coming up, where they can learn about the Constitution's role in battling pirates, fire an interactive cannon, and sail a model version of the Constitution. You'll also want to check out their new exhibit, All Hands on Deck: A Sailor's Life in 1812, where visitors can furl a sail, sleep in a hammock, and scrub the deck as they join Constitution's crew in 1812.

Multiple copies of the specific titles for grades 6 to 12 are housed in the library's Homework Center. Author Visit - John Morris

John P. Tobin Memorial Road Race

This event was great fun last year, so much was going on, lots of participants came to run, and all to benefit the Hanson Library's Children's Collection, through the efforts of the Tobin family in memory of Husband and Dad, John P Tobin.

It will be even better this year ! The date is November 7th.

Harvest Cranberries in the Bog Pit Exhibit

This is a fun travelling exhibit from the Hanson Children's Museum, which will be available here at the library this coming Friday and also on the 29th. It is free and available all day, but there are two Play and Learn groups you can register for. Session A is 10:30 a.m. to 11:15. Session B is 3:15 to 4:00 p.m. Give us a call to sign your child up.

It's a language learning system that our Hanson patrons can access with their library card from our homepage. Clicking on the Language learning icon there will take you to the Hanson BYKI login page. There is an amazing number of languages to choose from, familiar and exotic . Flip card system leads you through pronunciation and meanings, and soon you can get to phrases and so on. You can even test your pronunciation against the native speaker.
It is perfect if you are planning a trip, and tempting even if you didn't think you wanted to learn a foreign language.

New hours at the library

Starting in July, our hours are changing.
We are, as usual,closing Saturdays in July and August.

The new thing is, due to budget constraints, we will be closed on Wednesdays starting on July 7th until further notice.

The Saturday hours will resume after Labor Day.

"Overboard ! A True Bluewater Odyssey of Disaster and Survival" is the recounting of the terrifying experience and struggles of the crew of a sailing vessel caught in an unexpected massive storm at sea which swept the Captain and first mate overboard, leaving an inexperienced crew alone on the boat.

Author Tougias will be here at the library Saturday May 1, 2010,at 12:30, with a slideshow presentation that will bring this story to life.

The library has copies of the book available for sale. A book signing will follow the program.

On April 23rd, the Roaming Railroad choo-choo's to the library in celebration of National Library Week.

Advance tickets for a ride can be purchased here at the library for $2.50 each for adults and children. On the day of the event the tickets will be $3.00 each.

Pack your lunch and plan on spending some time . We'll have a Moonwalk, too; crafts and Thomas books and stories to entertain you. Rides start at 11 a.m.

Come on in and buy your tickets any time the library is open.

A fabulous tea party, a stylish assemblage

The party is off to a good start, as the guests , dressed in their finest, and their moms hear one of the Fancy Nancy stories written by Jane O'Connor while they sip their pink beverage and nibble daintily at tea cookies and cupcakes.

After enjoying these treats, it was off to the crafts area to decorate their own little bag and ribbon boa with jewels . What a lovely time !

Those at the well attended presentation of Mr. Miele here at the library on Saturday came away with a new appreciation and understanding of Katharine Lee Bates, Cape Cod native, Professor at Wellesley College, who was the author of many writings, among them the poem, America the Beautiful, still familiar in our world today.

It's a busy time here at the library this month, especially during school vacation week !
Check our calendar ...we're presenting the ever popular babysitting course again ,we've scheduled an intergenerational storytime with the Senior Center, a pajama storytime, Digging Dinosaurs [ a storyteller will be presenting this fun event for ages 4 and up ], and a movie/book discussion of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, complete with popcorn.

And that's not all. The Hanson Library Foundation is sponsoring an author this month...Leonard Miele, author of the book Katharine Lee Bates: Beyond America the Beautiful, will be here on Saturday the 27th with a slide show and book talk about K. L. Bates,her life on Cape Cod, the issues which shaped her poetry, and her career as a professor at Wellesley College in the early 1900's.

John P. Tobin Road Race

Sunday Dec. 6, will be a memorable day at the Hanson Library !

The family of John P. Tobin has organized a fund raising event which includes an adult road race, children's race, numerous raffles, crafts, and a DJ, all in their effort to raise money for a children's book collection in his name.

After John Tobin's death in 2008, their wish to create a memorial in his honor has resulted in this ambitious event to support the children's book collection at the library, which has already been enhanced through donations in his memory.

IF you haven't yet done so, you can come and sign up for the 5K race Sunday morning, at a cost of $25. Ribbons awarded to the winners !

Curious George was back at the Library this past Saturday for the Hanson Public Library Foundation's annual Open House. Kids had fun taking pictures with George and one child even read George a story!

An engaging speaker

Hank Phillippi Ryan was well received this past Saturday by assembled fans of her mystery series featuring Charlie McNally, investigative reporter. We all enjoyed hearing about the writing process, and how unexpected developments pop up as the plot thickens, when the lead character speaks to the author , changing the original plan of events and outcome.

Here she is, signing a book for Ms. Ann Marie, our children's librarian.

We're keeping an eye out for the next in the series, Drivetime, due on the shelves early next year.

She has a good thing going with her character Charlotte McNally, who appears in all 3 of her books: Prime Time, Face Time, and Air Time.

The library has all 3 titles circulating ; and, in anticipation of Ms. Ryan coming here Saturday September 19th, we have copies available for sale also, at $6 each.

LOBSTER BAKE

The Hanson Library Foundation is holding a Lobster Bake again this summer !
This event, very well received last year, is again catered by The Olde Hitching Post and held at Camp Kiwanee Lodge here in Hanson, on Wednesday, August 19 at 6:00 p.m.

The lobster dinner includes lobster, clam chowder,steamers, kielbasa, potato salad, corn and cole slaw, plus rolls , watermelon and a soft drink; ticket price, $40.00

If you prefer, there is a chicken dinner which includes 1/2 BarBQ chicken, potato salad,corn and coleslaw, plus a roll,soft drink and watermelon; ticket price, $25.00.

Advance tickets can be bought only through August 15 at the library or at The Hitching Post.

Don't miss it...fun times and good food and a good cause. Hope to see you there !

Yo-Yo fun

This is "Ooch", otherwise known as Brett Outchcunis. He came to the library Tuesday afternoon and entertained his young audience and instructed them in some cool moves with a yo-yo.

As you can see the kids were enthralled.

Pastel Workshop Pictures

We had a full house at Tuesday night's Pastel Workshop with award-winning pastel painter Gregory Maichack. Participants learned impressionist techniques and got some hands-on practice in using pastels.

At right are some participants blending colors to emulate a Monet painting or create their own art.

At left, Circulation Associate Donald uses a green pastel to add to his version of Monet's painting Regatta at Argenteuil.

The program was sponsored by the Friends of the Hanson Library and by a grant from the Hanson Cultural Council, a local agency, which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Thanks to these organizations for their support.

Lighthouses and harbors
